Better testing, treatment needed to stem spike in Bangkok male-to-male HIV infection

Free and anonymous testing and treatment of HIV infection would stem a growing epidemic of male-to-male transmission of the disease, urges The World Bank.

While outreach and intervention with female sex workers has been effective in reducing transmission with their clients, there has been little national response to transmission between men, according to its report, “Scaling up HIV Treatment for MSM in Bangkok: What Does it Take?”

”HIV/AIDS testing and treatment can save lives, maintaining people’s health and preventing new infections,”  Southeast Asia Country Director Ulrich Zachau said. “With testing and treatment available for free at many public and community-based clinics, Thailand can slow, even stop, Bangkok’s HIV epidemic, among men who have sex with men and other groups. The time to act is now.”

In metropolitan Bangkok, the number of HIV-positive men has increased from 21 percent in 2008 to 28 percent in 2012.
