Stricter tobacco laws approved by cabinet

A new raft of new tobacco regulations approved by the junta cabinet yesterday will raise the age to purchase cigarettes to 20 if passed by the legislature.

The new rules, first proposed by the Ministry of Public Health, would raise minimum age to purchase and also ban sales of individual cigarettes, as well as impose new limits on advertising and locations they could be sold.

No longer would tobacco products be sold at temples, educational institutions, public parks and other places under the new rules.

Tobacco-makers could also no longer deploy fetching pretties to market them.

The rules would also cover electronic cigarettes and water pipes, according to Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yutthawong.

Those caught selling to underage customers could face harsher penalties: up to a year in jail and THB20,000 fine, according to Thai PBS.

Also those oft-ignored signs posted in public areas threatening THB2,000 fines would be reprinted to reflect a new THB5,000 fine for smoking.
