Thai aviation scrambles to meet safety standards

Civil air officials have been given until Thurdsay to come up with a plan to improve safety certification for domestically registered carriers.

Shoring up Thailand’s safety standards comes after international aviation regulators issued a red flag, specifically identifying problems with delayed safety inspections, inadequate numbers of inspectors and skilled personnel, according to Transport Minister Prajin Juntong.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation issued the red flag Thursday after being warned in March of serious safety concerns.

Authorities will also prepare for safety audits from European and American aviation regulators. Failure to resolve issues could see the country’s safety certification downgraded, Bangkok Post reported.

Yesterday Thai AirAsia X announced it not seek another extension to an April ban on flights outside the kingdom and will stop flying its Japanese route Aug. 1.
