Snap a picture of a forest fire, get THB500

As part of a project aimed at reducing forest fires throughout Thailand, the Thai government is offering THB500 to anyone who submits a photograph of a forest fire to the Science Ministry.

Nicknamed “Hunt the Smog,” the new project’s aim is to curtail the clouds of smoke that have plagued northern provinces such as Chiang Rai during the past several months.

Photos that lead to the arrest of arsonists will nab the photographer THB5,000. If a photo is one of the first 10 submitted from a certain fire, and if that photo helps lead to the arrest of arsonists, the photographer will be granted THB10,000.

Arsonists, on the other hand, could face fines up to THB50,00 for their pyrotechnic indecencies.

Science Minister Woravat Auapinyakul said yesterday, in conversation with the Nation, that his ministry believes people trying to clear land for farming start many of the region’s fires.

The Science Ministry has yet to integrate all of its online communications (including Skype, social media, etc.) but for the moment, if you want to report a fire you can do so by calling 086 420 1968.
