Channel 5 cameraman dies in car wreck minutes after covering opening of Road Safety Center

In a darkly ironic incident, an automotive accident has killed a news cameraman, only minutes after the cameraman finished covering the opening of a road safety center.

Sunet Tawalee, the newsman in question, went to shoot extra footage of traffic on Mittaphab Road in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Sikhio district after covering the launch event of the Songkran Road Safety Center, chaired by Transport Minister Chatchart Sittipan. The 41-year-old Channel 5 cameraman was standing in front of his tripod when a passing car struck the Channel 5 news van, killing Sunet and injuring seven others.

The brutal crash reportedly occurred after Penkae Anchamnan, who was driving back home with her five relatives, attempted to overtake a bus in the left hand lane by accelerating her Toyota Vigo pickup truck. Penkae then bumped into the rear of the Channel 5 car, pushing it forward where it collided with Sunet.

The seven injured bystanders, who were sent to Sikhio Hospital, include reporter Pongsit Wannawijit, assistant cameraman Suriyan Panthapattarakul and five passengers in Penkae’s car. According to Manager, Penkae is being held at a police station for interrogation.
