Photo Essay: Siam Square, Central World ready for Songkran

Songkran will start in less than 24 hours. Apart from Khaosan Road and Silom, arguably the top two Songkran locations, Siam Square and Central World in Bangkok’s downtown area are some of the most popular spots to celebrate the holiday.

Today, Coconuts Bangkok checks out how ready these two places are for the influx of Songkran traffic.

At Siam Square, Chulalongkorn University and the Ministry of Culture are throwing a party with the theme of “White Songkran” to raise awareness about the safety of revelers and the importance of the Thai traditional ceremony. Participants will need to wear a piece of Pha Khao Ma or Thai multipurpose loincloth, which will be available for purchase on the spot. “White Songkran” will be open from 12 to 6pm between April 13 and 15. High-pressure water guns, baby powder, weapons, alcohol and inappropriate clothing is prohibited in the area.

Central World offers a more sophisticated vibe with the sixth Bangkok Songkran Festival 2013. During the day, visitors can perform Thai Buddhist rituals such as bathing a Buddha image. At night, the entire area will be transformed into an outdoor concert stadium, where a large number of singers will line up behind the stage. The event starts at noon and runs until 10pm throughout the three days of the festival.
