Bridge Repair Breakdown: Bangkok to close five bridges this June

This June, drivers in Bangkok will face even more traffic inconveniences, as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to close five bridges in inner Bangkok for repairs. This means no more fast tracks at intersections for drivers until the project’s completion in January 2014.

The first two bridges that have been scheduled for closure are the Thai-Japanese Friendship Bridge and the Asoke-Petchaburi Intersection Bridge. Both these bridges will be closed for 180 days, beginning June 1. The former, on Rama 4 Road, will be closed daily from 10pm to 4am, while the latter, where Asoke Montri Road meets Petchaburi Road, will be closed for 24 hours.

In October, three more bridges will be closed for a 90-day period. These bridge closures will take place between 10pm to 4am. They include Yommarat Intersection Bridge over the junction between Petchaburi Road and Phitsanulok Road, Pratunam Intersection Bridge over the junction between Petchaburi Road and Ratchaprarop Road and Ratchathewi Intersection Bridge over the junction between Petchaburi Road and Phaya Thai Road.

At the moment, the BMA is fixing the surface of the Thai-Belgian Bridge, which runs across the Sathon-Rama 4 Intersection. This bridge is closed on the outbound lanes, leading to Khlong Toei, and is due to become fully functional on May 15.

According to the BMA, the repairs slated for the second half of 2013 are part of this year’s THB111 million plan to restore bridges across Bangkok. Three hundred flyovers and 20 canal bridges will also be fixed.
