Of cats and cakes

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – If you’re into cute and cuddly, this could be your perfect hangout. Cataholic Café is a coffee and snack shop, but it also plays home to around 10 live-in exotic, short hair cats.

Cataholic Café is tucked into the second story of Ozono, a pet-friendly community mall in Bangkok. Besides the café, the mall also houses stores offering pet supplies and grooming. It’s not uncommon to see Chihuahuas and other fluffball dogs bouncing around on the outdoor greenery.

Cataholic Café recalls a living room, with pillows and cushions to sit on and little wooden tables. The decorations are (of course) cat-themed; they feature abundant figurines and knick-knacks, with a large print photograph of Siamese cats hanging on the wall. At the front of the café, there’s a large “cat tree” separated by sliding glass doors. This cats are relegated to this spot when being naughty or in need of a nap.

As a kitten owner myself, I was especially impressed by the café’s neatness and tidiness. My little guy raises hell all over the apartment, but these felines maintain a very sweet disposition. The cats are happy taking long siestas and posing for photos. There are even some small toys in case customers feel inspired to join in on the fun.

Besides the novelty of furry friends, Cataholic Café also serves up delicious drinks and munchies. A selection of coffees, teas and sweets dresses the restaurant’s menu. Starting from THB35, the cakes include, but are not limited to, toffee, rainbow cake and brownies. The display cooler will make your mouth water. In fact, there’s one particular grey-and-white kitty who loves to lay right next to it! The café also serves sandwiches and a daily dish, such as spaghetti or baked cheese on spinach.

Cataholic Café is located on Sukhumvit 39, near Phrom Phong BTS, but it can be a little difficult to find. Coming from Sukhumvit, one must traverse a maze of side sois. The café is most easily accessed from the back-end, by entering Petchaburi 38/1. If you’re keen, it’s less than a five-minute walk from the Ital-Thai pier on the Saen-Saep canal.

Cataholic Café offers just the right blend of kitschy and cute – perfect for a little afternoon delight.
