Government yields to pressure over school closures

Bowing to a public outcry and resistance from many civic groups, the Education Ministry has agreed to create a joint committee to look into the issue of small school closures.

Recently, the ministry stirred a public uproar with its controversial policy of closing down small schools that have fewer than 60 students.

According to the Nation, representatives from various groups appeared at the Education Ministry earlier this week carrying 18,081 signatures of people who are against the new policy. After meeting with the representatives, Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana said that those against the plan should play a huge role in trying to solve the problem of quality small schools.
