Weekend Warrior: May 24, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

London: The Modern Babylon screening at SF World Cinema
London: The Modern Babylon seems to view its titular subject as a raucous, ongoing riot, punctuated by the occasional appearance of Joe Strummer. Indeed, director Julian Temple seems convinced that punk rock forms the axis around which the world spins, but in this case, that worldview might not be too far off base. In Modern Babylon, Temple compiles a century’s worth of file footage to show a London rent by upheavals of the class, nationalistic and cultural varieties, all soundtracked to the sneering tones of several punk rock scions.

7pm. Free. SF World Cinema Central World. BTS Chit Lom Station.

Saturday

Make Your Own Little Train workshop at TCDC
TCDC’s announcement for this event specifically mention “kids” as the intended participants, but I have every intention of ignoring that restriction and spending my Saturday lovingly toiling over the creation my very own paper train. This (free!) event allows participants to make and decorate model trains, once more proving that the TCDC is the kindergarten I wish I had attended.
1 – 5pm. Free. TCDC (at the top of Emporium shopping mall). BTS Phrom Phong station.

Makkasan Hope concert at Lumpini Park
The struggle for the SRT’s Makkasan property continues, this time in musical form. This concert, staged by the Makkasan Hope foundation, will seek to raise awareness about the Makkasan property and its two potential fates, either as shopping mega-complex or one of Bangkok’s few green spaces. Performers at the free, daylong concert include Au, Pango, Mint in Motion and Summer Stop.
3 – 9pm. Free. Lumpini Park. BTS Sala Daeng station, MRT Lumphini station.

Sunday

Hip-Hop Dance Battle at the Alliance Francaise Bangkok
Established for the purpose of promulgating French language and culture, the Alliance Francaise de Bangkok might not seem like the natural habitat for a hip-hop dance battle. However, bear in mind that the Alliance does contain its own dance studio, and that the French have historically professed a “charming” relationship with the genre of hip-hop. Plus, hewing to the spirit of égalité, registration for this event is free, so there’s that as well.
Registration: 11am, Event begins: 1pm. Free. Alliance Francaise de Bangkok, Sathorn Mansion 1, Khlong Ton Sai, Khlong San, Bangkok
