Well-respected Buddhist monk Phra Achariya Wiraphon Chattigo, better known as “Luang Pu Nenkham,” was caught on camera while travelling in a private aircraft. He also accessorized his brown monk robes with a pair of golden Ray-Ban Aviators, a Jabra HALO2 headset and a Louis Vuitton bag.
Luang Pu Nenkham’s excessive possession of worldly objects contradicts with the ideal image of a Buddhist monk. The rules governing the conduct of Buddhist monks hold that they should relinquish their desires for unnecessary, luxurious items.
The video has prompted heated debates between opponents and proponents of the monk. Luang Pu Nenkham’s supporters said that the jet and accessories might have been gifts from his devotees rather than products of his own obsession with luxury. However, those more skeptical of Luang’s conduct noted that he should not have accepted such gifts in the first place.
