Weekend Warrior: July 5, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

MUSIC: International Drum Festival at National Theatre
Bangkok’s International Drum Festival offers performances from many different nations, all within the comfortable confines of a single concert hall. With Indian, Chinese, Thai and “contemporary” percussionists all lined up to show off their skills, this event seems like the perfect event for aspiring musicians and the worst of all possible worlds for the migraine-prone. Refreshments and an address by one of the TAT big wigs are on the table as well, so show up early.
6pm. Free. National Theatre, Somdet Phra Pin Klao Road.

DRUM ‘N BASS: Phatfunk Drum & Bass 3rd Anniversary at Glow
Thank you, Phatfunk, for having a killer sense of style and a heightened capacity for instigating a great party. Thank you even more for parlaying these abilities into a three-year tear of sweat, bass and booze-soaked abandon. Tonight, Phatfunk will celebrate this much-deserved legacy by hosting an anniversary with the following salient features: Dress Code = Camo; DJs = Sabre, Azek, Instinct, Orawan, Delorean; Open bar (for real) = 10 – 11:30pm.
10pm – Very late. THB350 (Includes one drink). Glow Nightclub, Sukhumvit Soi 23. BTS Asok station, MRT Sukhumvit station.

Saturday

COMEDY: Bangkok 555 at Glowfish
Bangkok 555 possesses several anomalous qualities, not least of which is its ability to create and maintain one of the comedy world’s slickest websites. Also among the group’s oddities is the fact that its membership consists of three British dudes whose sole raison d’etre is to crack wise about Bangkok, Thailand. And what’s more, they’re extremely good at this. For a clever, eviscerating take on this fair city, look no further.
8pm – 10pm. THB600. Glowfish (above Kuppadeli Asok), Sukhumvit 21. BTS Asok station.

Sunday

DESIGN-GASM: Life of Terada Mokei at Thailand Creative & Design Center
The TCDC has taken up more real estate in this column than almost any other venue (Glow, possibly?) and that’s because Bangkok’s impossibly chic workspace/design lab keeps showcasing fantastic quasi-obscurities, such as Terada Mokei. A Japanese design concept, Terada Mokei describes a style of 1/100th scale models that it maintains are a celebration of the 1/1 scale world we inhabit. Exquisite in execution and unified in style, Terada Mokei models boast an eerie, intoxicating power. Well worth checking out for fans of things/coolness.
10:30am – 9pm. Free. TCDC, top floor of Emporium shopping mall. BTS Phrom Phong station.
