Upgrade of Wat Suthat Thepwararam held back by lack of funds

The Wat Suthat Thepwararam is a majestic landmark that draws hordes of foreign and local tourists every day. Unfortunately, its latest renovation will likely cost THB250 million.

It is a stunning example of Siamese architecture and sits beside Bangkok’s Giant Swing. Having undergone a major overhaul 20 years ago, it is time for the temple to be renovated again. However, the temple has not been able to gather the necessary funds to continue with the renovation, despite being a favorite destination of both locals and tourists alike.

According to the Bangkok Post, the temple was constructed by His Majesty King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, or King Rama I the Great, in 1807. Its edifice was built to house the Phra Srisakayamuni Buddha image.
