Authorities looking to end minivan madness at Victory Monument

The Transport Company Limited is working with the Department of Land Transport, the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority (ETA) and the Traffic police in seeking a venue to make a terminal for passenger vans, replacing the existing one at the Victory Monument which is causing heavy traffic to the area.

Managing Director of Transport Company Limited Wuttichart Kalayanamit said the units mentioned agreed at their recent meeting that initially they would negotiate with the ETA to use a space underneath the expressway in Soi Morleng area, which is expected to accommodate as many as 1,000 passenger vans.

A request will also be made to the State Railway of Thailand to use a space close to the Makkasan train station as the parking lot of all vans. The area is currently under the ownership of The Airport Rail Link.

Mr. Wuttichart said that if the negotiations with the ETA and the SRT were successful, a design survey will be launched for the construction of the van terminal and parking station. He expected that all the passenger vans would be removed from the Victory Monument within the next 3-6 months. He hoped that the relocation would help significantly ease the traffic around the Victory Monument which is the capital’s famous landmark.
