National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) Vice President Dr.Natee Sukonrat stated yesterday that digital TV corporate licenses have been issued to the four main media channels in Thailand. System tests will take place at the end of August 2013 along with the distribution of set top boxes, which will allow consumers to receive digital TV signals.

The bidding for Thailand’s digital TV system will be held in the fourth quarter of this year. Natee expects 50% of the population to change its television systems to digital after the licenses have been issued. He vowed that the Thai public would be able to watch digital TV by the end of this year.

The prices for network services will be set before the bidding date, which is expected to take place before December 2013. Further announcements will be officially made in the Royal Gazette.

Thares Punsri, Chairman of the NBTC, presented the licenses to the four main corporations, which are MCOT Public Company Limited, The Public Relations Department of Thailand (PRD), The Royal Thai Army and ThaiPBS.

The NBTC also unveiled a mascot doll named “DooDee,” which will be used to foster public awareness about the digital TV transition.
