Petitions against PTT mushroom after Koh Samet oil spill

The oil spill off of Koh Samet has ignited a new eco-consciousness amongst many Thais, many of whom have started petitions against offshore oil drilling and PTT Global Chemical Plc (PTT), the company responsible for the disaster.

Greenpeace is currently gathering online signatures in support of its “No More Oil Spill“. The international environmental NGO demanded that “PTT must be held accountable for this destructive oil spill, pay full reparations to affected communities” and that “the Thai government to review its energy policy, cease oil exploration and drilling in the Gulf of Thailand, and strengthen renewable energy policy.”

On the online petition platform Change.org, a concerned citizen Orachorn Krasaein is calling PTT Group to hold the company’s executive meetings at Koh Samet. He claimed that doing so would directly help regain tourists’ confidence in the wake of the oil slick.

Also on Change.org is a campaign led by Samui resident Danai Thongsin, who is protesting against the offshore drilling by many petroleum firms, including PTT, around Angthong National Marine Park, as well as Samui, Phag-Nga and Tao islands. In his petition, Danai called on the Ministry of Energy to suspend any drilling until the projects are moved into deeper waters.
