A slice of Americana in Bangkok: Fatty’s Bar & Diner

Coconuts Hotspots shed light on new and notable or undiscovered drinking and dining venues in Bangkok.

COCONUTS HOTSPOT – With a name like Fatty’s, you know the place must be awesome and/or American. Situated on Din Daeng, Fatty’s is a new local joint fashioned in the spirit of the classic American dive bar—right down to the regular beer pong tournaments.

The focus is on recreating that grungy, anything-goes vibe found in thousands of local bars throughout the good ol’ U S of A. This is the antithesis of the trendy Bangkok dining scene—and that’s exactly why its exciting. Although it has only been open for a few months, Fatty’s feels like it’s been your neighborhood dive for decades. With a giant Wisconsin state flag draped above the bar, you can expect ti hear 40 oz. to freedom playing in the background as you chow down on zingin’ buffalo wangs (6 pieces./THB85).

Since the owner hails from the badger state, the menu has a healthy dose of regional specialties like the “Wisconsin Johnson,” which for the uninitiated is a bratwurst stacked with grilled onions, swiss sauerkraut and horseradish sauce. This mainstay is rivaled by the equally impressive “Lord of the Wangs,” which is a, “standard dog wrapped with six crispy onion rings to rule them all, topped with yellow mustard and BBQ sauce to bind them.” The only sandwhich that might be able to top these is the Fatty’s Fat Sandwich: a Wisconson brat with a freid egg on top, all covered by melted Wisconsin cheddar, then finished off with, you becha’, a healthy dowsing of buffalo sauce.

The jalapeno poppers (THB130) aren’t the only cheeseballs you’ll find here—the clientele seems to follow the classic Dive Bar formula. There’s an entire community here, and patrons come for events like beer pong, movie nights, and garage band-esque live music.

So c’mon down for a few brewkies, eh?
