DSI summons soap star over hour-long meeting with fugitive father-in-law

The Department of Special Investigations (DSI) has asked Channel 3 superstar Janie Thienphosuwarn to testify about her relationship with fugitive politician Vatana Asavahame, who also happens to be her father-in-law as of today.

DSI chief Tharit Pengdit said this morning that 31-year-old Janie and her 45-year-old husband, Chonsawat Asavahame, would be interrogated about a leaked photo of the pair and Vatana, who was found guilty of corruption five years ago but has since been in self-imposed exile.

During the announcement of their “controversial” marriage this morning, Chonsawat admitted to having brought Janie to Macao to meet with his father before tying the knot with her.

Tharit told Channel 7 that he was concerned about the hunt for Vatana, stating that the former interior minister has frequently changed his residence to undermine police. Last month, the Office of the Attorney-General approved a budget of THB194,900 to track down the fugitive, who was believed to be in Cambodia.

Aside from the legal scandal, the drama about Janie’s abrupt marriage loomed large in the Thai media today. Earlier today Janie, who arrived at the press conference with a seven-karat diamond ring, announced that she was tying the knot with Chonsawat.
