A new service that aims to put an end to the city’s massive drunk driving problem has recently launched in Bangkok.
Called U Drink I Drive, the company doesn’t want you to stop drinking, in fact it encourages it. You, the drinker, call the service and tell them where you’ll be partying and an estimated time that you’ll finish. Next, a text is sent to you with estimated fees and a profile of a personal chauffeur that will be driving your car home at the end of the night.
Now you drive your car to the club and proceed to imbibe completely carefree—all night long. After the club closes, your pre-arranged chauffeur meets you in the parking lot to drive your car back home with you in the passenger seat (or passed out in the back seat, depending on how your night went).
The chauffeur wears a headset containing a video camera and GPS system, which sends data to U Drink I Drive headquarters to be monitored. Patrons can also track their journey and view the streaming footage through an iphone app.
The fee for the service starts at 500THB to have your car driven home 5km.
When you consider that the going rate to bribe police to get through drunk driving checkpoints is around 3-5,000THB, and on the offhand chance that you do encounter an officer willing to take action it’s around 20,000THB and a night in jail if you get caught driving above the BAC limit (which seems to be arbitrary).
Either way, this program offers a great value. What’s more, you still get to take 20 minutes backing into the prime parking spots at the hottest clubs so everyone can see the new whip your parents just bought. That and, you know, above all else, it saves lives.
