Koh Phangan’s first airport slated to open in 2014

Partying is about to get a whole lot easier for tourists visiting Koh Phangan, the birthplace of Thailand’s infamous Full Moon parties, since the island plans to open its first airport by this time next year.

Entrepreneur Somphong Sooksanguan has plunked down THB200 million for the facility and is now seeking external funding from local and foreign partners. The project will require THB900 million for completion.

Somphong is the founder of commuter airline Kan Air and 51 percent stakeholder in Thai VietJet Air. He plans for the Koh Phangan airport to support the expansion of Kan Air, which serves Chiang Mai, Pai, Mae Hong Son, Phitsanulok and Khon Kaen, reported The Bangkok Post.
