New law aims to destroy Thailand’s ivory trade

The department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is drafting a new law that would effectively ban the domestic ivory trade in Thailand.

Currently the department examines ivory stocks from private operators, however the new law would not allow fresh ivory or ivory products to enter operator’s stocks.

Until the law is passed the department said it will focus solely on controlling the roughly 200 ivory selling-shops in the country’s northern provinces to ensure they are trading legally.

The department’s act would also allow protection of all domesticated elephants and remove them from the Animal Vehicle Act.

Recently, the government has felt considerable heat from international agencies on the treatment of endangered animals, reported The Bangkok Post.
