Last week Coconuts had the good fortune of visiting Hua Hin for the King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament. Although the stars of the show were the massive pachyderms, the people in attendance were just as fascinating.
Aside from a gaggle of fellow hacks, there were celebrities, retired rugby greats, famous ladyboys, an incomprehensible ‘Victorian troupe’ complete with little person, Thai pretties, serious polo players, business tycoons and the ridiculously wealthy. This hodgepodge of humanity coalesced just outside of Bangkok for a strange, long and brutally hot weekend of watching elephants meander around a pitch whilst aggressively drinking gin and tonics.
Needless to say, it was a good time.
The final match was played between two newcomer teams, Bangkok Bank and Mercedes. After five days of games featuring sixteen competitive teams from all across the globe, Bangkok Bank nabbed the King’s Cup with a 13-10 win. Standout players for Bangkok Bank were 73-year old veteran player Manclark, and fellow Scotsmen Alister Archibald and Michael Goodwin.
The event raised THB4.3 million to help fund elephant charity projects.
