Is Bangkok about to get “Uber?”

Feet or fare?  For those without a vehicle, the limited transit options in Bangkok might soon be in for a shake-up.

Coconuts Bangkok has learned that Uber, the smartphone app that’s transforming transportation in cities around the world, appears to be coming to Bangkok.

Last week, the company flew a job posting for a full-time operations and logistics manager here in Thailand’s City of Angels.

For the Uber-uninitiated, it is a private car service that allows anyone with an account to summon a ride with the tap of a finger. Summon a car, receive a picture of the driver and see its GPS-tracked progress on your screen. No cash needed as payment is handled through the application.

Born four years ago in San Francisco, Uber has expanded throughout the United States and into many cities around the world.

It’s also overcome legal challenges in many cities, where transportation services are regulated. We’ll see how Thailand’s often-protective taxi fleets respond to the potential competition.
