Gay marriage seeks support in Parliament

Slowly but surely, legal recognition of same-sex marriage is moving forward in the Thai kingdom.

After three months of public hearings, a parliamentary committee’s proposed bill will now seek support from legislators willing to sign their name to it.

It remains to be seen how quickly support comes to the bill. Although LGBT lifestyles are widely tolerated, it is often with something of a “don’t ask, don’t tell” mentality. Thailand’s social conservatives are likely to frown upon overt recognition.

The same-sex marriage bill was drafted by the Rights and Liberties Protection Department and the standing committee for legal affairs, justice and human rights in the House of Representatives, NNT reported.
