Soaked to the Bone: Flood alert as Typhoon Nari fallout to continue

Bangkok is back to full flood vigilance after torrents of unyielding rain soaked the Thai capital for much of the day.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is on full alert in response to fallout from a typhoon which ripped through Vietnam and Laos before dropping more than 150mm of water on parts of the city, causing partial floodingdowned trees and gridlock.

Rains from Typhoon Nari will continue through tomorrow and are expected to hit the eastern side of Bangkok hardest, affecting Sai Mai, Don Muang, Kanna Yao, Min Buri and Prawet districts.

Coming after a particularly wet fortnight, the intense and prolonged downpour risks overwhelming already saturated infrastructure. Work crews are struggling throughout the city to clear the water and drain swollen canals to the Chao Phraya River, said Adisak Kanti, head of waterworks for the Bangkok Metropolitan Association.

However the public should not be alarmed, he added.

“I ask the people not to be worried because Bangkok officials are doing their best, but there might be some traffic congestion and water on roads waiting to be drained,” he said.

The rain began falling at 1am this morning, Bangkok Post reported.
