Thai football election results challenged

Thai football stayed the course yesterday by its re-electing Worawi Makudi, but his victory could prove short-lived.

Though marred by allegations of impropriety, Football of Thailand President Worawi Makudi won a fourth consecutive term after a contentious election process played out yesterday, handily defeating challenger Virach Chanpanich 42-28. Unqualified rumor has it however that the association’s election committee, which will hold a press conference later today, might not approve the results.

Virach, a former national team manager who failed to unseat Worawi two years ago, complained of irregularities.

“The election was unfair and not transparent,” Virach said.

Worawi disputed that, pointing to procedural safeguards which had been put in place.

“It should be an example for elections in Thai sports because we had an election commission and an appeals committee to oversee it,” said Worawi.

Bargaining over whose camp would choose members of those committees could lead to a legal dispute, Bangkok Post reported.
