(Not) Free at Last: Thailand weighs tourist entry fee

Thailand’s days without a door charge for visitors may come to an end.

Future tourists may be asked to pay up to THB 500 to enter the kingdom under a policy being considered by the Ministry of Health.

While foreign nationals visiting for one or two days would only be charged THB30, those here for longer might face a THB500 fee under the draft proposal, according to the ministry’s Pradit Sintavanarong.

The proposed fee could generate upward of THB10 billion in revenue, he estimated, which would be sent to the Finance Ministry for redistribution to various agencies. Some would return to the Health Ministry to support the THB300 million spent each year for tourist health services, Pradit added, saying he would like to buy new medical gear and set aside up to THB300,000 for critical cases involving visitors.

He said their final recommendation will be formally proposed to the Cabinet when it is ready, The Nation reported.
