The epicenter of Bangkok’s gem trade will one day become home to the capital’s first massive outlet center.

Lertwit Phumipitak, senior vice president of Central Retail Corporation, announced today a THB100 million project to renovate Silom Road’s  Jewelry Trade Center.

The Jewelry Trade Center, a 59-story skyscraper known as one of the largest gemstone trading centers in Asia, will be reborn as the “Bangkok Fashion Outlet,” where Lertwit said shoppers will be able to enjoy 30 percent to 90 percent discounts from over 500 fashion retail brands.

Currently, outlet shops of major retail brands can be found scattered in various department stores at the outskirts of the city.

The 22,000 sq.m. area will be divided into three different uses. Outlet shops will occupy 45 percent of the space, with another 45 percent reserved for the jewelry trade, and 10 percent for art galleries. The project’s goal is to increase daily customer traffic to 30,000 persons per day, Prachachart reported.

Currently the Jewelry Trade Center only sees about 5,000 customers each day. In addition to the gemstone trade, the building also contains banks, restaurants, a health club and residential condominiums. It is also the kingdom’s eighth tallest building.

CRC has not revealed any details about when the project is expected to break ground or be completed.
