Sway this way to wings and beer

COCONUTS HOTSPOT — When’s the last time you poured your own beer from a tap at a restaurant? Or elected to actually stand around a bar in an environment that spurs conversation with fellow imbibers? Or filled up a growler of legitimate brew and brought it home for later consumption? If you’ve never embraced any of these traditions then it’s time to head to Arena 10’s latest addition to the hangout scene, Sway.

Chicken wings and craft beer are the name of the game here, and with an impressive host of 20 varieties of wings to choose from and a THB300 all-you-can wing special on Fridays, Sway certainly has a monopoly on the chicken-wing market. Adventurous eaters will enjoy the esoteric varieties like the Thai-slanted Pok Pok wing, or the Canadian maple syrup-dipped wing. In most cases, the simplest recipes are the best, and Sway delivers with a classic wing tossed in Louisiana hot sauce. But they take the classic recipe a step further by adding sweet honey and garlic to the classic recipe in their killer bee wing, or the OB wing, which adds a dusting of Montreal steak seasoning.

Sway is pioneering a movement encouraging consumers to pour their own beer. Using a combination of RFID cards, iPads, and a dozen beer taps, diners can pour themselves a full glass of brew, or they can pour just enough to try the beer. The idea behind this technology is that it brings diners into the drinking experience and it enables sampling instead of ordering a pricey pint that may not be a good match. American craft brews will fill the taps in the near future, as will their eponymous Sway Pilsner, which promises to be an ideal brew to wash down the wings.

The sports bar-like floor plan incorporates industrial touches like glazed cement floors and exposed piping, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows covering an entire wall. The venue is perfect for spending a night swilling suds and challenging your friends to an all-you-can-eat wing competition, but in the event that you long for something more substantial, there are a few hearty nonwing dishes on the menu such as the eggplant parmesan; oil and garlic chicken pasta; and meatballs with marina sauce.
