PANDA WATCH: Thai zoo seeks panda from China

Thailand’s beloved panda Lin Ping

A zoo in northern Thailand is urging the government to borrow another panda from China.

Authorities at Khao Suan Kwang Zoo in Khao Suan Kwang district said if China was to hand over an animal, it would be the zoo’s star attraction and almost certainly boost tourism.

Thailand, like much of the world, is obsessed with the black and white balls of cute. Perhaps the Kingdom’s most famous panda, Lin Ping, was avidly followed in Thailand on a 24-hour television channel before she was returned to China. Earlier this year an estimated 300 zookeepers from across the country rallied at Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo yesterday calling for the ouster of their national chief director-general Sanchai Jullamon for his failure to get another panda, Lin Hui, pregnant.

Governor Somsak Suwansudjarit said on Wednesday that the public and private sectors had decided to ask the government to ask China to lend another panda to Thailand as a goodwill ambassador, the Bangkok Post reported.
