Medical teams, supplies to leave for Philippines

As the Philippines struggles to cope with the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, Thailand’s contribution will soon be on its way.

A Royal Thai Air Force C-130 Hercules will take off Monday with the personnel and supplies needed to set up a field hospital.

The health ministry will contribute 60 metric tons of medical supplies, three medical teams of 15 doctors each, sanitation rehabilitation and mental health experts, according to permanent secretary Narong Sahamethapat.

Each medical team will remain in the area for two weeks, pending travel authorization from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong added.

This aid is on top of more than THB80 million raised by Thais through various channels and THB6 million from the government.

Other less-urgent supplies will be sent by sea, along with 5 million kilograms of rice from the emergency Asian rice reserve, The Nation reported.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can transfer money into account No. 067-0-09551-6 of the Krung Thai Bank, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra announced Wednesday night.
