Transportation services expanded during protests

Transportation services in the Thai capital are struggling to accommodate demand today as demonstrators disrupt traffic at more than a dozen locations across the city.

  • First, police closed six roads due to reports that antigovernment protestors today would seek to stop traffic at government offices and television stations, according to MCOT. Those roads include Ratchadamnoen Avenue near Democracy Monument, Phitasnulok Road between Yommarat and Wang Daeng intersections, Nakhon Sawan Road between Thewakan and Nang Lerng intersections, Ratchawithi Road between Karn Ruan and Ratchawithi intersections, Si Ayutthaya Road between Wat Benjamabopit and Phol 1 intersections as well as Rama V Road between Wat Benjamabopit and Panich intersections.
  • The BTS Skytrain service will run more often to increase capacity, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.
  • Travelers are advised to arrive at airports three hours before their flight time. Those heading to Suvarnabhumi Airport should consider using the Airport Rail Link services. Also, fewer taxis will be available at the airport, The Nation reported.
  • Passengers boats operating in San Saab Canal have extended their service period by half an hour. The last boat, which usually leaves Wat Sriboonruang at 6pm, will now leave at 6:30pm, while the one leaving the Phan Fa Lilat Bridge pier will leave at 7:30pm, NNT reported
