Taking their toll: New tollway projects in the works

A shiny new 17-kilometer tollway connecting Rama III Road to Dao Kanong and Bangkok’s outer ring road awaits final approval from the Council of Ministers, Aiyanat Thinapai, the president of Thailand’s expressway authority, said yesterday.

The construction, estimated to cost THB27 billion, will be an addition to Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway, passing south of the Rama IX bridge and Rama II Road to its end at the outer ring road. The tollway is intended to relieve traffic conditions on the Rama IX bridge.

Beyond the scope of Bangkok traffic, the Expressway Authority of Thailand also is studying the possibility of erecting a bridge to connect with Malaysia at Dan Sadao in the Songkhla province, which is expected to become an important trade route. Also, three other major projects to connect Thailand with Laos and Burma through Chiang Rai, Mukdahan, and Taak are scheduled for study next year to prepare Thailand for ASEAN integration, Daily News reported
