Weekend Warrior: Nov. 29, 2013

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, where we suggest a slew of preoccupations at venues ready for you to occupy this weekend.

Friday

Help for Philippines

Start off the weekend with nothing but good vibrations at this fundraiser for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Organized by a troupe of well-known Bangkok expats, including a couple of Filipinas, don’t expect this to be one of those boring charity soirées but more of a laid back gathering for a good cause. The entrance fee of THB300 includes two drinks, so you really have no reasonable excuse not to pre-game here and put your baht where it counts! Hit up the Facebook event page for more information about the raffle, as tickets are already on sale for THB100 a pop. The prizes include restaurant vouchers, a hotel stay in Hua Hin and a round-trip flight to Phuket.

8 pm. THB 300 including two free drinks. Kazbar, Sukhumvit 11. BTS Nana.

Meet the Makers

Channel your inner Castro or Kennedy on Friday with the latest edition of Whisgars’ “Meet the Makers,” led by cigar expert Abe Flores. The master blender from PDR Cigars is teaching guests about the fine art of stogie rolling, followed (of course) by lighting up. Besides his lucky cigar roller from the Dominican Republic, Flores is also fielding new cigars such as AFR75 and Gran Reserva to smoke and enjoy with a whiskey pairing. Don’t forget live music from Whisgars’ resident band, Whisky Blues.

7 pm. Whisgars, Sukhumvit 23. BTS Asoke Station, MRT Sukhumvit.

Disco Robot presents Look No Hands

The blaze of disco inferno in Bangkok has yet to die down, especially with Disco Robot’s last wildly successful event headlined by legendary DJ and Studio 54 regular, John Morales. Joining DJ Jaydubb, the bionic man behind Disco Robot, this month is DJ Absolud. For the last few years, the Dutch native has become a fixture on the groovy island paradise of Koh Tao as the owner of Moov bar, but he’s also known for hopping on the decks on Phangan and Samui.

10 pm. THB 250 including one drink. Black Pagoda, Patpong Soi 2. BTS Sala Daeng, MRT Silom.

Saturday

Kite, Kyoto Procol and Louis Spoils

We’re not quite sure what happens when a Swede, aMalaysian and Aussie rocker walk into a bar, but we’re certainly game to find out. Up-and-coming concert promoters Popscene are throwing three indie rock bands onto the stage of Cosmic Café for an eclectic, mishmash of a set. First up is Scandinavian electro-pop outfit Kite, followed by Kyoto Protocol, a five-piece band from Kuala Lumpur that’s made the rounds internationally. Since starting in 2008, the boys have opened for MGMT and played alongside the Chemical Brothers and Tinie Tempah. Last on the bill is Australian singer-songwriter, Louis Spoils.

8 pm. THB 300 including one drink. Cosmic Café, Royal City Avenue. MRT Petchaburi.

Future Grooves

A week after blowing the roof off with the DJs from Berlin’s Bar 25, Ocean Bangkok officially opens its “Ocean Below” basement clubroom with the first of what’s planned to be a weekly event. Kicking off the series: DJs Swindle, Orawan, IK, Barbosa and MC Emon.

9pm to 11pm. Free entry. Open bar 9pm to 11pm. Ocean Pool Lounge, Sukhumvit 33. BTS Phrom Pong Station.

Zaban Party

If you’ve never gotten loose at Moose, it’s about time. On Saturday, energetic hip-hop duo Dujada is having a shaker in the funky Ekkamai restaurant/café/gallery/whatever to release its new music video. Also performing is the drum ‘n’ bass team Animal Machine, DJ To-Ru from Japan and the homegrown talent of DJ Pichy.

9 pm. Free entry. Moose, Ekamai 21. BTS Ekkamai.

Sunday

Electric Sundaze Part 1

Sunday BBQ parties seem to be all the rage in Bangkok lately, and here’s another one to tick off as the tropical sun shines on. Presented by Party Animalz, this lounging afternoon affair is going down the rooftop of the recently opened Siam@Siam hotel. The menu is still on its way, but we’re definitely intrigued by the sweet city view and underground beats by DJs Mary Jane, Orawan, Cello and all.

4 pm. THB 600 including one drink, or THB 500 before 6 pm. Siam@Siam, Rama 1 Road. BTS National Stadium.

Correction: An ealier version of this article had the wrong day for Ocean Bangkok’s Future Grooves party, which is on Saturday.
