Photo Essay: Moto Expo fields the realm’s prettiest pretties

Don’t call them promotional models or booth babes. In Thailand, the Thai word “pretty” is used to describe the lovely ladies of commercial marketing.

So it should come as no surprise that the kingdom’s biggest car show also features the fairest pretties in the realm.

pretty is generally a attractive woman paid to stand with products – cars, toaster ovens, computer hard drives or most anything – to grab attention and build image. They’re usualyl not required to actually present the products. Don’t confuse pretties with emcees, which host promotional events. An emcee may be pretty, but she’s not being paid to be a pretty. These girls are paid to talk and usually earn more than pretties.

So solely for the sake of our readers’ cultural education, Coconuts’ photographer Siwaporn Wongchaiyakul headed to the 30th annual International Motor Expo yesterday to catalog this storied tradition.

If you want to see them for yourself, the show ends Tuesday. Some of the pretties’ thoughts are included in the gallery below, which is best enjoyed in all its full-screen glory.
