Photo Essay: Big walk in Little China

Cooler weather is coming, so it’s a great time to go outdoors and take a walk without that permanent film of upper-lip sweat.

One must-walk destination is Bangkok’s Chinatown in the Yaowarat district, which looks a sprawling set to a Won Kar-wai film. Bangkok.

Yaowarat Road was constructed during the reign of Rama V to be a market area for Bangkok and many Chinese immigrants settle their home and business here. More than 100 years later, Yaowarat still reflects its deep Chinese roots in its architecture, decor and vendors.

There’s also some great fresh markets and street food.

Inexpensive fruit and roasted chestnut stands are plentiful, unfortunately so are many shark fin soup restaurants.

After 5pm the road will be crowded with delicious street food such as rice with red pork, fish maw and shaved ice, most open until midnight.
