Some take pride in their statues’ poses, while others brag about having the biggest feet or other features.
Over at Buddhamonthon, they’ve got what’s recognized as the highest free-standing statue of the Buddha in all the world.
Located about 30 minutes west of downtown – on a good day – in Nakhon Pathom province, Buddhamonthon is an important religious site sitting atop about 1,000 acres of land. Construction began in 1957 to celebrate 2,500 years of Buddhism.
The park opened officially in 1976. The statue, which was designed in 1955 by famous that famous Italian adopted by Thailand, Silpa Bhirasri, was cast in 1981. It stands 15.87 meters high in the center of the park.
