Before they left for the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar last December, Thailand’s junior football players were made a promise.
Earn glory for the kingdom by winning back the title, last held six years ago, and you’ll each get THB1 million.
Win the title, they did. Get the bonus, they did not.
Football Association President-elect Worawi Makudi yesterday asked players to be patient after they refused to accept a much smaller bonus from officials.
“I don’t know the details of what happened,” said Worawi, who hasn’t been officially reinstated for another term following a storm of controversy surrounding the October election. “I assume that some seniors, with good intentions, wanted to give the team a boost by promising money. So I want the players to stay patient for a while.”
It’s not the first time players have voiced disappointment over promised remuneration. In October, players received no bonus after winning the AFF Futsal Championship except for THB2,000 handed out by their coach.
In other football news, Worawi said it would name Kiatisak “Zico” Senamuang, who led the Myanmar bid, as coach of the senior team, The Nation reported.
