Billions to be spent on fixing BKK, upgrading DMK

Many billions will be spent before Bangkok’s underperforming international airport is fixed, and next month THB1.3 billion will go toward sending those fixes the drawing board.

Construction of another terminal, more plane parking bays and infrastructure improvements is expected to begin in August to increase Suvarnabhumi Airport’s capacity to 65 million travelers per year, according to newly installed airport authority President Makin Petplai.

After its construction became a boondoggle overwhelmed by delays and accusations of graft, the airport opened seven years ago with serious problems including long delays and being woefully undercapacity. So serious were the problems, authorities turned the lights back on at the old international airport of Don Muang, which resumed full service two years ago.

The first part of bidding on the construction will go toward THB40 billion in improvements to the concourse building, 28 new parking bays and exit doors, Petplai said.

Phase two will be the THB7 billion eastern terminal, and a THB2.6 utility system will come third.

Over at Don Muang, expansion projects are expected to increase that airport’s capacity to 30 million annually by the end of this year, Bangkok Post reported.
