4G hopes rise as DTAC to launch service soon

Thailand’s telcoms promise a full 4G future will arrive soon with DTAC announcing plans start service as soon as April.

Starting with a cluster of 300 base stations mostly located in Bangkok, DTAC plans to temporarily launch the system in the 2.1GHz spectrum in the second quarter, according to CEO Jon Eddy Abdullah.

That will bridge their customers into 4G service until DTAC – and others – can offer true 1.8GHz service after licenses are auctioned later this year.

Of the provider’s nearly 30 million users, Abdullah said 95 percent are expected to switch to the new network. More than half of its 11,000 3G broadcast units are on 2.1GHz already, with 5,000 broadcasting at 2G level of 850MHz.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will hold the auction later this year. The Nation reported.

The launch of 3G service in Thailand was long delayed after the spectrum auction was delayed and postponed several times.
