Missing expat writer’s friends suspect foul play in disappearance

If you hang out in Bangkok and Southeast Asia long enough and hit certain bars or writers’ haunts – often the same – David Walker is one of those guys you’re inevitably going to meet.

Many friends of the Canadian-born journalist are concerned after he vanished Friday from where he was staying in Siem Reap, a disappearance authorites are now investigating.

Walker’s disappearance could have been linked to his investigative work relating to surviving members of the Khmer Rouge, according to a friend and colleague.

“During the past year or so, Dave and his Cambodian partner Sonny Chhoun interviewed lots of ex-Khmer Rouge and their victims for stories about how they survived during Pol Pot’s “Killing Fields” regime, especially in the area where dave was living, Siem Reap,”  said Bangkok-based journalist Richard Ehrlich by e-mail.

Walker, 58, reportedly was last seen walking out of his room at the Green Village Angkor guest house in Siem Reap with a bottle of water, after a maid asked to clean the room. Not in his possession: phone, laptop, passport.

“Dave left behind his mobile phone which was recharging, his open laptop which was in sleep mode, his Canadian passport and luggage,” Ehrlich said.

A missing persons report has been filed on behalf of the Australian embassy.
