Weekend Warrior: Feb. 21, 2014

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, wherein we will aid you in boldly going where probably more than a few people have gone before, but that’s okay because it should be fun.

Friday

JUKEBOX BURLESQUE: Moulin Rouge: A Musical Theatre Production

It doesn’t get kitschier than Checkin99 – the little restaurant and bar, close to Landmark Hotel in Nana, is revered for its revolving troupe of soulful Filipino singers and regular cabaret-style dinner shows. This weekend and next, the house theatre crew is putting on a production of Moulin Rouge, adapted and choreographed from the movie. If it’s anything close to Checkin99’s last musical take, Rocky Horror Picture Show, expect a riot – and nothing like that beastly music video for “Lady Marmalade.”

Friday and Saturday, and February 27 and 28 at 8 pm. THB 900 for reserved seat and two drinks, THB 600 without. Checkinn 99. Sukhumvit between Soi 5 and 7. BTS Nana.

BIRTHDAY BASH: Oasis of Freedom

The V64 art studio is unveiling something special for its third anniversary: new graffiti murals painted by 10 of Bangkok’s best street artists. The evening is jam-packed with live music performances (Indie band Count The Thief and Paul Wilkinson on acoustic), free drinks and first dibs on taking home new artwork. Check out the Facebook event page for more details, and a list of over 30 artists in attendance – this could be the perfect opportunity to rub shoulders with Bangkok creatives and maybe even commission your own original piece.

7:35 pm. Free entry. V64 Art Studio. 143/19 Chaeng Wattana, Soi 1 Yak 6. BTS Mo Chit Station, MRT Chatuchak.

PRIVATE PEEK: Young Ji Kim Open Studio

For those intimidated by artsy elitism, here’s a much smaller event to whet the visual palette. Emerging Korean artist, Young Ji Kim, is showing the contents of her studio for a couple hours, seeking honest feedback and new acquaintances. Despite being young, this girl has an impressive list of artistic accolades and her paintings are delightful and dreamily avant-garde.

6 to 8 pm. Free Entry. The Hop, Silom between Soi 18 and 20. BTS Chong Nonsi.

Duck & Noodle: It’s a Bad Idea

Duck & Noodle is not to be outdone.  These connoisseurs of electronic music are holding an all-hands-on-deck dance party in an old soy sauce factory in Chinatown…  that used to be an opium warehouse… and will soon be a gallery and studio. Yeah! Kenneth Scott is delivering a live set, playing a Roland MKS-30 and Moog Miniatur – to emphasize, this is not a DJ set. Also on the bill are Bangkok’s resident dubstep darling, DJ Dragon, and DJ Capo Ultra from Jam’s resident CRM Crew.

8 pm. THB 200 including one drink. Soy Sauce Factory, Charoen Krung Soi 24. Chao Phraya Si Phraya Pier.

Saturday

CHARITY DINNER: Indus for Soi Dog Foundation

It’s dangerously easy to splurge on a THB1,000 dinner at Indus and not think twice – now you can eat mouthwatering Tandoori and also help out a charitable cause. The longstanding fine dining restaurant is teaming up with the Soi Dog Foundation to raise money for puppies who were recently about to become a meal.  Half of ticket proceeds go towards the program, and raffle tickets (with fabulous prizes including hotel and restaurant vouchers) are THB100 each.

8 pm. THB, 1000 for buffet and one free drink. Indus, Sukhumvit 26. BTS Phrom Pong.

MULTIMEDIA: Art Party!

Get ready to be bombarded with creativity from all directions – this shaker is a smorgasbord of multimedia art, from installations to performance, sound and live music. It’s all going down at The Space, a gallery project founded by war photographer James Nachtwey (who recently made headlines by getting shot at a protest site). It’s become a neat little haven for emerging local artists, and boasts one heck of a view of the Chao Phraya.

7 pm. Free Entry. The Space, Khlong San Plaza. Chao Phraya Station Khlong San Pier (next to Millenium Hotel Bangkok)
