Say no to the “R-word,” because calling people names in any language is lame

Different people are funny, right? Truth is there’s something “different” about each of us, even if the world hasn’t found a way to insult us for it.

However there are some specific words to single out people with Down’s Syndrome, and it turns out insulting terms like “retard” aren’t unique to English.

To discourage the use of “pan ya onn” in Thai, several Thai organizations have launched a local version of an international campaign to promote awareness that there’s nothing cool about being a jerk.

To recognize “World Down Syndrome Day,” the Bangplay Learning Theatre Group and Drama Cube Studio will stage an experimental performance with a message on March 22 and 23.

“The Rainbow Theater,” presented by Art Connection and the Rainbow Room, is part of a campaign to discourage the use of dehumanizing language and increase public awareness of the realities of Down’s Syndrome and autism.

A preview of the performance will be held on March 22, with the actual performance to stage at 4pm on March 23 at Museum Siam.

Admission is free, and the event will also include information booths and activities. The United Nations designated March 21 as “World Down Syndrome Day” in 2011.
