10 years of Silpathorn: Prestigious Thai artists celebrate anniversary with new performances, retrospective

For a decade Thailand has recognized its great living artists with the prestigious Silpathorn Award. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, works from all 52 Silpathorn winners are being shown and a series of workshops and lectures kick off tomorrow through March 23.

Seven new performances will be staged under the art direction of renegade dance master Pichet Klunchun,

Novelist Chart Korbjitti and painter Chalermchai Kositpipat, Silpathorn winners who went on to be named National Artists, are among the participants who will share their knowledge with other artists and the public.

Entry to all events is free.

Here are the performances, as presented by the Office of Contemporary Art And Culture:

 

1. Trom (Sorrow)

by Manop Meejamrat (Performing Arts, 2005)

Exploration of the last 40 minutes of life

2. Chitta Nakhon

Thai puppet show for audiences of all ages

3. Mahasamutr (The Ocean)

by Janaprakal Chandruang (Performing Arts, 2009), Win Lyovarin (Literature, 2006), Pichet Klunchun (Performing Arts, 2006), Bruce Gaston (Distinguished, 2009)

Janaprakal’s adaptation of Buddhist teachings

4. Krao Nai

Exploring the Thai spirit through performing contemporary arts with a new impression

5. Nithan Zen

by Nikorn Saetang (Nikorn Saetang, 2010) and Win Leowarin (Literature, 2006)

Nithan Zen is a play Adpated from Leowarin’s “Mangkon Zen,” by Nikorn and his 8×8 Theatre

6. Mangkon Salat Kret

by Pradit Prasarttong (Performing arts, 2004) and Thunska Pansittivorakul (Film, 2007)

Stage performance by Pradit which is inspired by Thunska’s “The Terrorists” film about Puey Ungphakorn, an notable Thai bureaucrat who shaping of economic development and system of higher education.

7. Shadow-Body

by Sineenadh Keitprapa (Performing arts, 2008) and Pinaree Sanpitak (Visual arts, 2007)

Body expression and movement performed by Sineenadh which explores gender issues inspired by Pinaree’s artwork, which is also featured in performance
