Could the ‘strongest minister’ be the strongest challenger to Bangkok’s governor?

Could the Internet’s favorite Thai politician be considering a run for governor?

With Bangkok’s current governor facing a do-over of last year’s election due to campaign violations, the name of (caretaker) Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipant has been floated as a potential challenger.

The possibility was raised by former Pheu Thai party MPs who met yesterday to discuss who should be fielded to face incumbent governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra should the Election Commission call for a new election.

The commission ruled Tuesday that Sukhumbhand violated campaign laws last year in speeches attacking his opponent, Pol. Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen, Bangkok Post reported.

Seen as an exception to the rule of large-living, bombastic politicos, Chadchart’s image has helped fuel a cult of reverence, particularly among young Thais who are often disenchanted with the political status quo.

But whether the “strongest transport minister,” as he’s known online, can carry that favor over into votes would remain to be seen: Sukhumbhand received about 1.2 million votes to just over 1 million for Pongsapat in 2013.

Chadchart has yet to publicly signal interest in the office, but continues to broaden his appeal with key groups such as the critical kitty demographic.
