Chadchart plays down gubernatorial ambitions

In one of those careful non-denials, (caretaker) Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipant is being demure about his interest in running for Bangkok’s governorship.

In comments to reporters, the popular minister who inspired a slew of Internet memes said he “hadn’t thought about” seeking the post nor had he been approached.

“Being popular doesn’t mean that I would be able to govern Bangkok well or that people would elect me as governor,” he told The Nation.

Chadchart, who’s successfully cultivated an image as a humble and dutiful public servant, said his work in transportation isn’t finished – although his signature projects were largely set back by a court ruling last week which eliminated their funding.

However he’s been nurturing the positive attention in appearances throughout the kingdom, including meetings with high profile figures like U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney.

Were Chadchart serious about challenging incumbent Gov. MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, he’d have little reason to signal his intention now as a replay of last year’s election may not happen.

Pheu Thai Party officials floated Chadchart’s name after a Thursday meeting to consider their prospects should the Election Commission’s decision to invalidate last year’s election be carried out.

The commission voted to fault Sukhumbhand for denigrating his opponent last year in violation of campaign law. An appeals court will soon decide whether to overrule that decision.
