Although tons of garbage wash up on the shores of Bang Saen daily, some people still choose to enter the waters of the once-popular beach resort.
More than 100 swimmers regretted that decision after being admitted to a nearby hospital on Saturday.
An “asphalt-like substance” was found along with the usual garbage on a long stretch of the Chon Buri province’s beach.
Authorities blamed a “foreign cargo ship,” The Nation reported.
