A huge fire which began at a garbage dump in Samut Prakarn province continues to burn out of control for a second day, creating a large cloud of toxic smoke.

Smoke from the approximately 40-acre fire has affected air quality in Samut Prakarn and also Bangkok’s eastern districts of Lat Krabang, Bang Na and Pravet, along Srinakarin Road.

Authorities have declared the site a disaster area to facilitate the provision of services and evacuation of residents.

The dump, located in the Muang district, was previously operated by a private company but had been closed for several years. Despite that, authorities said trucks continued to illicitly dump trash there.

The fire started on Sunday afternoon and continued through the night. The cause has yet to be determined, Bangkok Post reported.

People with respiratory problems, pregnant women, the elderly and children are being asked by public health officials to leave the area, JS100 radio reported.

Online, many people posted photos of smoke from the fire and reported a bad odor which smelled like burning plastic.
