Yingluck’s license plates turn up in lottery results, divine mandate obviously conferred

When Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra tripped coming out of her ride in Chiang Mai on Saturday, it provided some rough chuckles. But she had the last laugh when the license plates of that van and another were the Sunday’s lottery results

Lottery numbers are a source of serious superstition in Thailand, and the results prompted a group of anti-government protesters to march on the Lottery Bureau and demand an investigation.

The Thai lottery’s smallest wager is the “last two digits” prize, and Sunday’s lottery result was 79, which matched the last two digits of one of one of the two vans she rode inside while in Chiang Mai.

And for those who prefer the underground stakes, gamblers can also win by matching the last two-or-three digits of the first prize lottery. Once again the lucky number was 404, which matched the lucky van she lost her balance in front of.

This morning the Government Lottery Office was asked to confirm to the press that the lottery numbers were selected randomly, and indeed Yingluck’s license-plate win was just a coincidence, Sanook reported.
