Profiles in courage: Three chicken eating champs prepare for winged victory

Bangkok’s fiercest feasters are right now preparing for mortal poultry combat over piles of chicken wings. This eating contest, hosted by Thong Lor’s Sway, could be the first of its kind in Bangkok to showcase the kind of public gluttony traditional in Japan and the United States. A few contestants took a break from their training regimens to share their thoughts and feelings on the eve of this occasion of momentous mastication:

Kevin “The Gobbler” Prasomsri

“I’m rookie. This will be my first time competing in an eating competition.”

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Profession: Italian Beer Drinker at Pacific B&B

Weight: 82 kilograms

Experience: None. “Aside from countless buffet lines and Thanksgiving dinners with my family, the most I have eaten in one sitting is one whole large pizza from Little Caesars. This was back in university days, and I have regretted that day ever since.”

Workout regimen: “I’m not putting that much preparation time in, but I like to think I’ve been getting ready for this since Thanksgiving, 2009.”

Advantage: Speed. “I’m a fast eater, and I’m going to use my quickness to win.”

Disadvantage: Stomach pains. “Here’s hoping I don’t cramp up.”

What is your ultimate skill and how is that going to make you a winner?

I’m usually a fast eater, so I’m going to use my quickness to win! Speed is the name of the game. Here’s hoping I don’t cramp up.

Tommy “The Tortoise” Nori

“I’m incredibly stubborn. My goal is not to win, just not to finish in last place.”

Hometown: Oslo, Norway

Profession: DJ, promoter and photographer

Weight: 80 kilograms

Experience: Amateur. “I’ve never taken part in any real contest like this, but it’s common for us guys to see who can finish the most wings on a night out.”

Record to Date: 41 spicy hot buffalo wings in one sitting ,“It was mixed wings and drumsticks. I still have no idea how I did that. There have also been some pretty big meals too.”

Workout regimen: “I’m just going try to eat a normal breakfast and lunch on that day so my body is not going to go through shock during the contest.”

Advantage: Willpower

Disadvantage: Slow. “Since we only have 10 minutes to eat it’s going to be a bit difficult, I’m not used to eating fast like that.”

Giovanni “New Kid on the Trough” Chittò

“I’m a complete noob.”

Hometown: Rome, Italy

Profession: Ambassador at Beervana

Weight: 80 kilograms

Experience: None.

Record to Date: None. “This shall be my shining moment.”

Workout regimen: “Vigorous exercise, drinking a ton of water and eating everything in sight.”

Strength: Determination. “It’s free food; I’m going to make the most of it.”

Weakness: Inexperience
